Here I'll walk through the subject, first the short version, then looking a little deeper. I'll use Reaper as my example, but most points are valid across the board of DAWs<br />
<br />
<h2>
Short-version</h2>
Mixing ITB vs mixing on an analog desk has similarities, yet there are different princippels for each. Thus, you should not confuse one with the other.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://encrypted-tbn2.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcSpdNGsDWOsbxFVN_Wf-UkaePqxXBm8gzrRrXbkpSH-mp_PaCuU5g" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://encrypted-tbn2.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcSpdNGsDWOsbxFVN_Wf-UkaePqxXBm8gzrRrXbkpSH-mp_PaCuU5g" /></a></div>
<br />
<h3>
Recording/ tracking</h3>
When recording audio into your DAW, make sure you're never above 0dbfs on your AD-converters. In the 24-bit converter world, getting a too low input level is less an issue, so as long as you above let's say -35dbfs you're ok.<br />
Practically speaking I recommend:<br />
<ul>
<li>Peak-levels: Between -30 to -6dbfs</li>
<li>Rms-levels: Between -35 to -12dbfs</li>
</ul>
<b>Aiming for -18dbfs rms is a good practice.</b><br />
<br />
<h3>
Mixing</h3>
Reaper uses 64bit floating point as default for internal processing. This means practically unlimited headroom. So technically speaking, using plugins that handles this (like ReaEq), anywhere between -100dbfs to +100dbfs is valid.<br />
Practically, this is not recommended for 2 reasons<br />
<ul>
<li>Metering, faders -range: Metering, knobs, faders and other visual aspects are made for typically -30 to 0dbfs usage.</li>
<li>Saturation and plugin-clipping: Some plugins are made for a specific sweetspot, much like analog gear. And some will clip above a certain point.</li>
<ul>
<li>-18dbfs rms is the sort of modern industry-standard</li>
<li>Some plugins have a higher sweet-spot. Variety Of Sound-plugins comes to mind</li>
<li>And some are configurable for gain of your choice.</li>
</ul>
</ul>
<b>Advice: Aim for a gain-flow around -18dbfs rms</b><br />
(unless specific other needs)<br />
<br />
<h3>
Master-bus/ rendering</h3>
Although Reapers internal gain-structure may go far above 0dbfs, this is not the case when leaving the master-bus (or any hardware output). This is about:<br />
<ul>
<li>DA-converters for you monitoring</li>
<li>Rendered output when mixing down your song for an wav/mp3 or similar</li>
</ul>
I'll not <span class="st">dwelve </span>into mastering here, just recommend:<br />
<ul>
<li>Make sure you're <b>levels </b>are <b>below -0,5dbfs peak on the master output</b></li>
<li>It's often wise to have a limiter as last fx on you master-channel (eg. MGA JS Limiter). But, be aware if it's actually limiting the audio or not. Ceiling -1,2 to -0,5dbfs.</li>
<li>You can use your limiter threshold to adjust your monitoring-levels.</li>
</ul>
<br />
<ul>
</ul>
<h2>
Looking a little deeper</h2>
<br />
<h3>
RMS vs. peak</h3>
So, what is rms dbfs vs peak dbfs?<br />
RMS: Is an average value over a set time-frame. We often use 300ms. RMS is often similar to analog VU db.<br />
Peak: Is an absolute value of the highest point of your wave-form.<br />
ISP: Note that a signal may have a peak-value below 0dbfs, yet have an ISP (Inter sample peak) above 0dbfs. <br />
<br />
<h3>
Gain and faders</h3>
So, where do you set your faders?<br />
Well, if your recorded audio is about -18dbfs rms, then starting out with faders at 0db for tracks and buses is a good idea. Then, lower the ones that needs to be quieter in the mix.<br />
This will result in a level on masterbus that's maybe somewhere around -12dbfs rms to -6dbfs peak.<br />
Now, adjust the threshold of your master-fx limiter to -3 to -6db, and things should be stellar.<br />
<br />
But what if your recorded audio is everywhere but -18dbfs rms?<br />
Well, there are different solutions:<br />
<ul>
<li>Use pre-fx volume envelope/knob</li>
<li>Use a gain-plugin (anything with a volume-knob will do)</li>
<li>Use a sophisticated gain-plugin, like <a href="http://www.tb-software.com/TBProAudio/ab_lm.html">TBProAudio AB_LM vst</a></li>
<li>Normalize audio (Action > "Normalize item")</li>
<li>Or, don't care that much.</li>
</ul>
<br />
Myself I tend to go with a mix between aiming for -18dbfs rms for recording, and don't care that much when mixing. But, I'm considering changing to a -18dbfs rms mix gain workflow with pre-fx vol or something like TBProAudio AB_LM :)<br />
<ul>

But, I wanted to know better, to have a closer look at how things are.<br />
<br />
That means testing and measuring.<br />
<br />

<h3>
Preface</h3>
I'm experiencing poor bass-definition, and bass-boosts. It's hard to use monitors for eq-decissions, relying much on headphones.<br />
I've treated main reflection-points, and one corner with 30mm high density Rockwool. Though it helped a lot, I'm eager to see some more detailed analysis.<br />
<br />
<h3>
I used</h3>
- REW, <a href="http://www.roomeqwizard.com/">Room EQ Wizard</a> (software)<br />
- Cad 179 (mic)<br />
- A spl-meter (from Clas Ohlson) <br />
<br />
My speakers are: Krk Rokit 5 G1<br />
and I used my Mackie vlz3 (preamp and monitor-controller) and Rme Hdsp audio interface<br />
<br />

Readings</h3>
<ul>
<li>The measurements clearly show the trouble I'm experiencing in the bass-area.</li>
<ul>
<li>59hz +7db </li>
<li>96-101hz is +12db</li>
<li>271-300hz, 560hz, 782hz and 1,1khz -5db</li>
<li>383-487hz +4db</li>
</ul>
<li>And left speaker is very poorly placed in the corner compared with right speaker. </li>
<li>Then sustained frequencies ringing for more than 1000ms for 41 and 50hz; 83hz maybe more relevant. </li>
</ul>
<br />
<h3>
Conclusion</h3>
My setup, monitors, room and acoustic treatment is poor, and it's hard to use it for mixing. I'll be relying much on my headphones for eq decisions still.<br />

The various panels makes a sort of DIY vocal-boot, for my modest home studio. <br />
<br />
But first: <br />
Sound-clips talks, bullshit walks<br />
<br />
Room without treatment: <br />
<audio controls="">
<source src="http://www.g-sun.no/Upload/Room/Room-Empty%20room.ogg"></source>
<source src="http://www.g-sun.no/Upload/Room/Room-Empty%20room.mp3"></source>
If you cannot see the audio controls, <a href="https://www.blogger.com/www.g-sun.no/Upload/Room/Room-Empty%20room.mp3">listen/download the audio file here</a>
</audio><br />
and, with acoustic panels:<br />
<audio controls="">
<source src="http://www.g-sun.no/Upload/Room/Room-With%20panels.ogg"></source>
<source src="http://www.g-sun.no/Upload/Room/Room-With%20panels.mp3"></source>
If you cannot see the audio controls, <a href="https://www.blogger.com/www.g-sun.no/Upload/Room/Room-Empty%20room.mp3">listen/download the audio file here</a>
</audio><br />
<br />
The pros of doing it like this are:<br />
1) It's rather cheap<br />
2) It's removable. Setup/down-time is like 10min. So ideal for a multi-function room.<br />
3) Works quite well<br />
<br />
So, here are some pictures<br />
<br />

I've done 40 passes of each.<br />
The original is normalized to rms-value , and each take is then adjusted to same value (0,1ms window. This gives peaks within 0,8db). Setup is within +-1,5db for in/out.<br />
The playlist is wav 44,1khz/16bit with peaks around -2dbfs. <br />

Edit: I've just discovered Soundcload streams in 128kbps. That's just lame for this kind of listening. Will provide some better listening.<br />

<span style="font-size: large;">A ReaBundle</span></h2>
This is part 2 of <a href="http://geir-music.blogspot.no/2013/12/a-reaper-newbie-guide.html">G-Suns Reaper Newbie Guide </a><br />
<br />
In most other DAWs, you'll find
many bundled effects and instruments. Reaper is not like this -there
are no or few native instruments. Reapers effects (eq, compressor etc.)
on the other hand are simple but good -try them!<br />
<br />
Here I
present to you some of the most praised and used free effects and
instruments, enabling you to make excellent music and mixes. And I've
added some affordable good options where I believe they are worth
mentioning. These are my personal recommendations and of course: All
credit goes to the makers of these plugins!<br />
<br />
<b>
Preparations</b><br />
You'll need a place for your vsts, samples, something like this:<br />
"C:\vst\"<br />
"D:\Reaper Projects\" (for your project audio- and Reaperfiles )<br />
"E:\Sample Library\" (for various sample libraries)<br />
"E:\IRs\" (Impulse-responses goes here)<br />
(Be sure to tell Reaper where the vsts are according to user guide 1.16)<br />
<br />
<b>
Main packages</b><br />

<h2>
<span style="font-size: large;">Introduction</span></h2>
Welcome to this Reaper Newbie Guide! <br />
The guide is aimed at you who are new to Reaper and maybe DAWs in general. <br />
There are three main sections:<br />
<br />
<i><b>Part I</b></i><br />
<b>a) The Reaper essentials</b>. <br />
What you need and how to get started.<br />
b) <b>The Reaper add-ons</b>. <br />
Themes, control-surfaces and handy stuff.<br />
<br />
<i><a href="http://geir-music.blogspot.no/2014/02/g-suns-reabundle.html"><b>Part II </b></a></i><br />
<b>A ReaBundle</b> <br />
Instruments and effects to make music (may be refereed to as G-Suns ReaBundle)<br />
<br />
<br />
<h2>
<span style="font-size: large;">
The Reaper essentials</span></h2>
1) If you haven't done so already. <a href="http://www.cockos.com/reaper/download.php" target="_blank">Download Reaper</a> ( 64bit ) and install.<br />
2) Download the <a href="http://www.cockos.com/reaper/userguide.php" target="_blank">User Guide</a> by Geoffrey Francis<br />
3) Download and install the <a href="http://www.standingwaterstudios.com/" target="_blank">SWS-extension</a><br />
<span style="font-size: x-small;">(</span><span style="font-size: x-small;"><span style="font-size: x-small;">Tip! </span>You may find various manuals. Grab 'm all and save into Reapers home directory e.g. "C:\Users\'YourName'<account name="">\AppData\Roaming\REAPER\Docs"(win). They'll then show up in Reapers help-menu )</account></span><br />
<br />
<b>
Getting started</b><br />
Now, when you start Reaper, the minimum you'll have to do is to set up in/out audio and midi (at least audio out). Read manual 1.12 and 1.15.<br />
The next thing is telling Reaper where you have your vst-plugins. Read manual 1.16<br />
Then reading the whole manual is an excellent idea. But let's admit it: That's a lot of pages..<br />
You'll maybe find Geoffreys <a href="http://www.cockos.com/reaper/guides/REAPER%20Quick%20Start.pdf" target="_blank">QuickStartManual</a> shorter and very handy :)<br />
<span style="font-size: x-small;"> </span><br />

I've been trying out many design-ideas for my new project home studio. ( <a href="http://geir-music.blogspot.no/2012/08/building-small-studio-preface-and-toc.html">eg. 1</a> <a href="http://geir-music.blogspot.no/2012/12/double-garage-to-studio-1-overview.html">2</a> ) <br />
<br />
And, finally, I reached out to get some help. John H. Brandt is now the designer <br />
( <a href="http://www.jhbrandt.net/">http://www.jhbrandt.net</a> ) and together we've come rather close to final design.<br />

<br />
This is my second attempt to get a functional room for recording and mixing (last attempt <a href="http://geir-music.blogspot.no/2012/10/building-small-studio-big-halt.html">here</a>)<br />

<h4>
Goal</h4>
My goal is to have a good place for recording and mixing music, mostly for myself, one instrument at a time -e.g vocal, ac.guitar, percussion. But it should also work for a band with drums, or several people doing voice-over. Sound-isolation aim is 60db. It should also be a nice room to be in. <br />

Then, realizing what needed to be done, things have come to a big halt - a musical G.P. (General Pause).<br />
<br />
In order to get a good small studio-room in our shed I would have to:<br />
<ul>
<li>Redo the floor completely, making it concrete, leveled and with insulation and heating.</li>
<li>Redo the outer wall completely.</li>
<li>Build a room in the room (inner room)</li>
<li>Redu most of the rafter-structure, possibly two new ridge beams.</li>
<li>Replacing 90% of all studs</li>
<li>Redo the roof with heavier sub-roof</li>
<li>Redo the electrical completely</li>
<li>And then all the inside-room acoustic taming and tweaking.</li>
</ul>
So, then it seems like less work to tear it all down and start from the bottom. And then, I might as well build something from scratch on another spot on our property.<br />
<br />
So it's time to rethink the whole project..<br />

In this post I'll go into the details for walls, roof and floor.<br />
<br />
<h3>
Floor</h3>
As it is, the floor is a divided in a section with concrete-slab (no: betong-såle) and a wooden construction on concrete poles.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ydeCSIfatnY/UFdDJPqgA0I/AAAAAAAAAO4/C1i_F5IaL40/s1600/P9170076.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" height="150" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ydeCSIfatnY/UFdDJPqgA0I/AAAAAAAAAO4/C1i_F5IaL40/s200/P9170076.JPG" title="" width="200" /></a></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-uGQf5GoqAp0/UFdDO5r68HI/AAAAAAAAAPA/6yABtWM5LZc/s1600/P9170078.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="150" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-uGQf5GoqAp0/UFdDO5r68HI/AAAAAAAAAPA/6yABtWM5LZc/s200/P9170078.JPG" width="200" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Concrete-slab and wood</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
My plan is this:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-OTSlyAlXKnQ/UFgeFYYkX0I/AAAAAAAAARM/DDwBbNf7Z4w/s1600/Gulv.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="216" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-OTSlyAlXKnQ/UFgeFYYkX0I/AAAAAAAAARM/DDwBbNf7Z4w/s400/Gulv.png" width="400" /></a></div>
The acoustic underlay of 20mm is high-density floor-insulation (no: trinnlydsplater), like <a href="http://guiden.rockwool.no/produkter/byggisolering/trinnlydplate-med-duk-">this</a>.<br />
<br />
Question: The plan for the floor is creating some treaple-leaf-effect. Is it good enough? Any other way to do this?<br />
Qustion: Any alternatives for using the asphalt-plates? <br />
Isssue: It's not much space below the studs: I don't know how well I can stuff in the insulation, not to mention to put the asphalt-plates on.<br />
<br />
Edit: I need to give the studio-floor a second thouht. Maybe it should be reflective and wood-based. Plywood maybe.<br />
<br />
Update: <a href="http://www.johnlsayers.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=17820">http://www.johnlsayers.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=17820 </a><br />
<br />
<h3>
Walls</h3>
Walls are currently studs with "barn-clothing" (no: låvekledning).<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-kmD2izNncIU/UFdDlLC18xI/AAAAAAAAAPw/jn5wqczu7gE/s1600/P9170084.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="150" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-kmD2izNncIU/UFdDlLC18xI/AAAAAAAAAPw/jn5wqczu7gE/s200/P9170084.JPG" width="200" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
My plan is this:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-u7vqlQVtooo/UFgfupPCbOI/AAAAAAAAARU/xkK8fznrcjA/s1600/Yttervegg.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-u7vqlQVtooo/UFgfupPCbOI/AAAAAAAAARU/xkK8fznrcjA/s640/Yttervegg.png" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
For the walls with door and window (east and west) I plan 2x4" studs with 10cm insulation for the inner walls. That's for easier installation of door and window.<br />
For the two other walls I'm using 1,5x3" studs and 7cm insulation.<br />
<br />
Update: <a href="http://www.johnlsayers.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=17826">http://www.johnlsayers.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=17826 </a><br />
<br />
<h3>
Roof</h3>
<br />
My plan for the walls applies for the inner roof as well (1,5x3" / 7cm) .<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Before</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Like this:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ZeV-OhfvIwI/UFhn3q1OLAI/AAAAAAAAAR4/qSO1O64Pexo/s1600/Tak.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="183" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ZeV-OhfvIwI/UFhn3q1OLAI/AAAAAAAAAR4/qSO1O64Pexo/s320/Tak.png" width="320" /></a></div>

In this post I'll try to formulate a plan for the new sound-studio, with pictures and drawings.<br />
<br />
Note 1: This is plan version 1, and will probably change according to feedback from more experienced studio-builders and knew insight along the way.<br />
Note 2: Details about the plan will be posted in later posts.<br />
See <a href="http://geir-music.blogspot.no/2012/08/building-small-studio-preface-and-toc.html">toc</a> for overview.<br />
<br />
<h3>
General idea</h3>
My general idea is this:<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-52OT4u7F16E/UE3h3ufWeaI/AAAAAAAAAG4/iepOcwGZeLk/s1600/Uthus+plan,+SkUp,+top.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-52OT4u7F16E/UE3h3ufWeaI/AAAAAAAAAG4/iepOcwGZeLk/s320/Uthus+plan,+SkUp,+top.png" width="317" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">3D-modell. Click for bigger image.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/--7hkFK-ickM/UE3jy2eEzOI/AAAAAAAAAHI/Eqkm-i0CV7w/s1600/Uthus,+plan,+SkUp,+iso.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="163" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/--7hkFK-ickM/UE3jy2eEzOI/AAAAAAAAAHI/Eqkm-i0CV7w/s320/Uthus,+plan,+SkUp,+iso.png" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Front, from south</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<br />
I'll make a double-wall construction for the sound-studio, 12,8 and 8,9/11,5cm wide, with a gap of 1cm. So that basically aplies for walls and roof. For the floor it's a floating (no: trinnlydspate) with insulation under.<br />
<br />
This give me a space of 4,25m x 3,14 m and a hight of approx. 3,17m, in this shape:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-7kTT9N3ZQsg/UFMOrUrz6fI/AAAAAAAAAIY/almWsQNFse8/s1600/Lydstudio,+indre,+iso.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="227" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-7kTT9N3ZQsg/UFMOrUrz6fI/AAAAAAAAAIY/almWsQNFse8/s320/Lydstudio,+indre,+iso.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-nS9CSwIc4GI/UFMPYInjK2I/AAAAAAAAAIg/Eob7OWyZ6yY/s1600/Lydstudio,+indre,+vest+iso.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="214" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-nS9CSwIc4GI/UFMPYInjK2I/AAAAAAAAAIg/Eob7OWyZ6yY/s320/Lydstudio,+indre,+vest+iso.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Giving me a room-volume of .. (< 40m3)<!--40m3--><br />
<br />
My mixing-position will be facing north, with monitor-monitor-myhead making a triangle of 3 x 1,2m (approx)<br />

But, it seemed obvious to me that the bridge-pickup wasn't to happy about the passive mod. <br />
<h3>
The goal</h3>
My goal is a one-room, budget-studio. I'll be recording and mixing in same room, with mostly me doing things alone. I'm planning it big enough for a trio with drumset, but no vocal-booth -at least not for now. Budget is tight, so it'll have to be a few compromises and DIY-solutions.<br />
<br />
I'll often record vocal, acoustic guitar, some percussion and misc.<br />
<br />
<h3>
What is</h3>
The house is a shed, located on the middle of our plot, with trucks passing by at 60-70km/h 150m away, and occasionally some planes passing by. So, this means I have to to my sound-proofing well.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-hKGCcCouiwc/UEBs1D69nKI/AAAAAAAAAGM/7iXURygn0d4/s1600/Uthus+med+m%C3%A5l.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="201" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-hKGCcCouiwc/UEBs1D69nKI/AAAAAAAAAGM/7iXURygn0d4/s320/Uthus+med+m%C3%A5l.png" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Shed with planned sound studio in the left part.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
The hight is 1 1/2 floor. And the interior is currently a small garage, an isolated room and a room for firewood and tools.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-wefHY6OQq8w/UEB5Ro-8CuI/AAAAAAAAAGk/Owpb-Jjirgg/s1600/Uthus+innvendig.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-wefHY6OQq8w/UEB5Ro-8CuI/AAAAAAAAAGk/Owpb-Jjirgg/s320/Uthus+innvendig.png" title="Shed, interior" width="271" /></a><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-2pWepHEO6N4/UEB5QjNeFyI/AAAAAAAAAGc/_JwOPscegX0/s1600/Uthus+h%C3%B8yde.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-2pWepHEO6N4/UEB5QjNeFyI/AAAAAAAAAGc/_JwOPscegX0/s320/Uthus+h%C3%B8yde.png" title="Hight" width="288" /></a></div>
The sound-studio will be inside the blue arrows 442cm x 339cm, possibly the 442 (magenta) arrow.<br />
<br />
<h3>
Floor, walls and roof </h3>
Walls: The outside walls of the shed are typically built with 2x4" studs, with "barn-clothing" (Norwegian expression, no: låvekledning).<br />
Floor: The floor is one part concrete fundament, another part studs (2x4") on concrete poles with hardwood on top.<br />
Roof: The roof is studs, some hardwood slats and metall-plates on top (yes, those that make most noise if raining)<br />
1st floor: Studs with hardwood<br />
<br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-CUUtn1gDckM/TwxyheMVlzI/AAAAAAAAAEw/h0uyLOf8aU8/s1600/S6304894_red.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-CUUtn1gDckM/TwxyheMVlzI/AAAAAAAAAEw/h0uyLOf8aU8/s640/S6304894_red.jpg" width="457" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-bITKMmd4b2Y/TwxymyqHJ6I/AAAAAAAAAE4/zySRqvSNzzI/s1600/S6304900_red.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-bITKMmd4b2Y/TwxymyqHJ6I/AAAAAAAAAE4/zySRqvSNzzI/s640/S6304900_red.jpg" width="450" /></a></div>
<br />
It's 3U + 10U + 4U<br />
and made of 2100 x 400 x 18mm wood panel from Biltema (<a href="http://www.biltema.no/no/Bygg/Oppbevaring/Oppbevaring-hyller/Hylleplate-med-limfuge-16602/">biltema.no</a>), plus a little this and that.<br />
<br />
Difficult parts:<br />
I misunderstood the concept of the 19" inner measure, so the first rack-rails I ordered didn't fit. Had to order the thinnest rails I could get -from the US.<br />
Getting all to line up to square was also difficult, and especially getting the doors right.<br />
<br />
Else I'm quite satisfied. The rack are fitting nice beside my PC, awaiting some more DIY-stuff :)Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6188656543654483339.post-50978134559186830962011-12-12T12:22:00.001+01:002011-12-12T12:43:48.184+01:00Preamps: HJFP2 - UA610 - Onyx<br />

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: verdana, geneva, lucida, 'lucida grande', arial, helvetica, sans-serif;"><b>Introduction:</b></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: verdana, geneva, lucida, 'lucida grande', arial, helvetica, sans-serif;">This is two <a href="http://homerecording.about.com/od/microphones101/a/mic_types.htm">dynamic</a></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: verdana, geneva, lucida, 'lucida grande', arial, helvetica, sans-serif;"> mics, that's sort of industry-standards.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: verdana, geneva, lucida, 'lucida grande', arial, helvetica, sans-serif;">The SM58 is an industry-standard for live vocals. The Sm7b is an industry standard for dynamic vocal mic for studio-recordings. So, what's the difference between the two?</span><br />

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: verdana, geneva, lucida, 'lucida grande', arial, helvetica, sans-serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span">Well, it's some obvious differences. The Sm58 is designed for being held in the hand. While the SM7b is for mounting on a stand only, and is really to big to be used for a vocalist on stage. Not so obvious, but important: Gain. The Sm58 need quite some gain for a low-level vocalist. But the Sm7b need 10db more! That means that many prosumer preamps will not have enough clean gain for it. So, be warned. So, what's the difference in sound? Let's find out..</span></span><br />

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: verdana, geneva, lucida, 'lucida grande', arial, helvetica, sans-serif;">The sm58 is definitively a very good mic, good value, usable on stage and in studio. I find the sm7b to have a little more bass, being a little smoother/classier. </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: verdana, geneva, lucida, 'lucida grande', arial, helvetica, sans-serif;">I seem to hear some noise on both mics though, a little unsure what's that about.</span><br />

<br />
UA 610 solo: L10 means Level 10 (clearest setting), G10 means Gain 10 (tubiest setting)<br />
<br />
Recorded at -10bdFS (+-3db), normalized with RMS-window 0.3-2s (depending on source)<br />
<br />
<b>Conclusions:</b><br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>The UA 610 solo is just a very good preamp</li>
<ul>
<li>In the clean setting, it's rather clean and neutral</li>
<li>When dialing in some more gain, it really gives you something extra.</li>
<li>Rocks on DI Bass</li>
<li>It's balanced in the low end</li>
<li>and pleasant sounding in the high end</li>
</ul>
<li>The Onyx, though being a useful preamp for most sources, does not have the same pro-studio-quality. Though, this should be expected when comparing features and prices.</li>
</ul>
<div>
I'm just very happy with getting this into my studio. I can't think of any source that the UA 610 solo wouldn't handle well.</div>

The Gap73 hit the market a couple of years ago. It has been praised for being a quality preamp with a very moderate price tag ($300).<br />

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: verdana, geneva, lucida, 'lucida grande', arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;"><b>Conclusions:</b></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: verdana, geneva, lucida, 'lucida grande', arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">- I didn't fancy the Gap73-sound that much, kind of new that..</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: verdana, geneva, lucida, 'lucida grande', arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">- The Gap73 wasn't the best match for my C1 jj mod, as both are a little dark.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: verdana, geneva, lucida, 'lucida grande', arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">- The gap73 sounded very nice on BassDI, and SM58 dynamic mic.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: verdana, geneva, lucida, 'lucida grande', arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">- Learned: "Trust your ears Luke"</span><br />
